      While the sun is the closest star to us, its nearest neighbouring star is Proxima Centauri at 4.24 light years away (this is something like 25 trillion miles). To try to put this into context: Voyager 1, which is speeding away from the solar system at about 38,000 mph, would take around 74,000 years to reach Proxima Centauri.
