From an engineering point of view: the different modules were designed, built and tested on Earth; then take to space on the shuttles. Once in space, the different modules were joined together by astronauts on space walks.

From a political point of view, it’s also amazing, there was the whole cold war thing going on, yet many countries overcame their differences to agree what the ISS was for, who would do what, how it would be paid for etc.
