      Hi,
Sound is the vibration of air which when it hits your eardrum causes it to vibrate and is interpreted by your brain.
If you drop something on the floor, say, it causes the air to vibrate which then arrives in your ear.
If there is no air, or any other gas for that matter, then your eardrum won’t vibrate and you won’t hear a sound.
